Our animals

It’s a strange dichotomy that people who purport to care about animals, kill them and eat them. No escaping the irony here! But if we accept that humans are largely omnivorous, we should also acknowledge that there is a good way and a bad way of putting meat on the table. We opt for the good way.

We have a flock of ewes, a few wethers (boy sheep who can’t do the business), and every year, a host of lambs who swell the numbers. The first two categories are very pleased to be living at SoCo where they are named, loved and known for their individuality and character! But sad to say, the third category, while treated with the greatest respect, are only temporary residents here at the farm. Mostly, they make their way to your place - via the abattoir.

Our ewes are a mob of absolute characters. We have Marigold, Edwina, Tuti, Lily-White, Chanel, Gertrude… the list goes on. Each of them an individual quite unique from the next. Our wethers are hefting lads, there largely to boost the mob, and to entertain the new ram when he arrives at two yearly intervals. Currently, the ram is Albert. He arrived about a month ago and on Mother’s Day, he made his debut with the ladies. He was with them for about five weeks, and is now in a separate paddock until next year. As sheep are flock animals, some of the wethers will keep him company for the months between hot dates.
